Akshaya Tritiya

Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated on the third lunar day of Shukla paksha of Vaishakha (April-May) month. This day is extremely auspicious for new beginnings, buying gold and other precious gems. It is believed as a 24hour power period that can change the line of destiny providing a window to create a new desired life.

The Sanskrit word is translated to “Akshaya” meaning ‘eternal or endless’ and Tritiya- third lunar tithi. Various Vedic scriptures elaborate on the auspiciousness of this day. This day is said to dispel darkness and bestow indefinite financial growth, longevity.

Significance

Vedic month Vaishakha hosts many festivals aimed at purification and cleansing. Cleansing enables a fresh flow of positive and prosperous energy. Numerous significant events in Hindu Mythology are said to have begun on this day. It is said that Lord Ganesha composed Mahabharata on this day. Tretha Yuga started on this day. Lord Parasurama avatar appeared on the earth plane on this day. He is the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, the warrior avatar who wiped off all the unruly demon kings.

Lord Krishna rewarded his childhood friend Sudhama with immense prosperity and riches on this very day. Divine river Ganga descended to earth plane on Akshaya Tritiya. Pandavas received divine Akshaya Patra through sincere Tapas towards Sun God on this day. Lord Kubera was assigned the lordship of the heavenly wealth on this day. Akshaya Tritiya brings successful results to all facets of life.

Rituals

An enormous amount of divine energy descends on this day. We can perform a special Pooja or schedule a Homam to accumulate and assimilate this energy into our human consciousness. Physical, mental and energy purification process also plays a vital role towards utilizing the energy. Start the day Sun salutations or honoring the Sun. Physical purification is enabled by taking a holy dip in a sacred river or some Theertha (water body) of a temple. Or we can take a shower with water-soaked with neem leaves at home.

We must clean the Pooja or the live sacred space at home for Pooja or homa. Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Kubera are important deities of this day. People preferably perform Lakshmi Narayan pooja, Lakshmi Kubera Pooja, or relevant homes on this day. While Poojas, Homas pave the way for mental and energy purification. In addition, drop all negativity, chant Lakshmi Ashtotra, Vishnu Sahasranama, and other slokas on Goddess Lakshmi for mental purification.

  • Donation of Food and Buttermilk- food items that are white in color like milk and pudding are preferred.
