Alluri Sita Rama Raju Jayanthi


Alluri Sitarama Raju is an Indian revolutionary who hailed from the lands of today’s Andhra Pradesh. He was born on 4th July 1898 (some records state- 1897) He is known for leading the Rampa Rebellion of 1922 against the British rule. This rebellion was against the Madras Forest Act that passed was passed in 1882. This law was an attempt to exploit the forest zones and greenery for economic purposes. This act restricted free movement of tribal people in the forests and prevented from following their traditional “Podu agricultural process”, where they burnt a particular area of forest land to convert into an agricultural land. This act affected the tribal’s subsistence economy that highly involved on shifting cultivation. They faced severe starvation and began working for cheap coolie jobs offered by British government like road construction.

Alluri Sitarama Raju was an undistinguished scholar with deep knowledge in astrology, herbalism, palmistry. He lost his father early in his life and was raised by his uncle- Rama Krishna Raju, a tehsildar in Narsapur in the West Godavari district. His close association with nature and schooling made him familiar with the indigenous people and their challenges. He became popular and gained a widespread support from the tribal people. In 1922, after trying out non-cooperation movement for a long time, he led an armed rebellion in favour of the tribal people and a desire for change. He organised a mob of 500 tribals, ambushed offices, raided for guns and ammunition and looted the police stations. After the rebellion, Alluri was eventually trapped by the British in the forests of Chintapalle.

He was tied to a tree and was executed by gunfire in Koyyuru village. His tomb is located in Krishnadevipeta village. He is referred as the “Hero of the Jungle’ and is remembered for his brave efforts on his birthday which is observed on July 4. Many art forms – books, movies and poems are created in honour of this great revolutionary.
