Bharat Milap

Bharat Milap is a popular festival held in Varanasi in the month of Aswina. This festival is celebrated to commemorate Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after 14 long years of exile and His glorious reunion with His brother, King Bharatha. The name of the festival Bharat Milap – milap translates to reuniting or meeting and Bharat- King Bharatha. King Bharatha took charge halfheartedly as King of Ayodhya and was awaiting Lord Rama’s arrival. It is believed that Bharatha placed Lord Rama’s Khadau or wooden slippers on the King’s throne as a reverence to his elder brother and deep-rooted morals and familial ties treasured in Indian Culture. On the Gregorian calendar this day occurs in the month of September or October. This festival signifies triumph of truth, victory of Good over Evil.

Bharat Milap festival is observed on the day following Dussehra. Bharat Milap festivities are held at Nati Imli, Varanasi. The annual Dussehra festival ceremonies and Bharat Milap are popular attractions of Kashi - Varanasi city. People of Varanasi celebrate Bharat Milap with great fanfare and devotion.


Grand procession of Lord Rama, Sita Devi and His brothers Lakshman, Bharatha and Hanuman decorated with colorful flowers and bright lights marks a major part of the celebration. Thousands of devotees gather in the streets to see this procession of Lord Rama and His reunion with younger brother, Bharatha. People offer their prayers to the idols of this procession. They draw a Tilak on the forehead and offer garland to Lord Rama and His brothers. Other attractive event of this celebration is the display of Varanasi King Kashi Naresh’s royal paraphernalia and regal finery.
