History of Earth Day

The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, when San Francisco environment activist John McConnell and Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson separately asked Americans to join them in a grassroots demonstration to save Earth. Dealing with dangerously serious issues related to toxic drinking water, air pollution, and the effects of pesticides on food affected over 20 million Americans which was about 10% of then population was the initial goal of the day. People gathered, ventured outdoors and protested together against these factors affecting the Earth.

Post which American President Richard Nixon led the nation in creating the Environmental Protection Agency and implemented successful laws including the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, and the Endangered Species Act. John McConnell originally chose the day of spring equinox, but Senator Nelson chose April 22 since the day of spring equinox might vary every year and April 22 ended up becoming the official celebration date.

Earth Day 2022 Theme

Earth Day Organization has made the official announcement for the theme for Earth Day 2022- “Invest In Our Planet.” The focus is to act in a bold way, innovate in a broad way, and implement in an equitable manner in saving Earth. Every government, every business, and every individual in this world has a voice. But there is not going to be one person who can do it all. Together, we can make a difference. It is time to act as a team together.

Sustainability is the only answer to sustainable prosperity. Smart and Innovative companies realizing that going green will help us all and not it is imperative that all business leaders must become active and engaged in shaping the future for sustainability. It is also time to approve and take the benefit of a green economy. All governments and independent organisations should encourage society, institutions, and businesses to build a framework for supporting a stable and green future.

The idea behind this year’s theme lies in encouraging the governments, corporations, and private sectors and even citizens to take concrete steps towards more sustainable business practices, buying from greener companies, and taking active roles in ensuring Earth’s wellbeing and expanding green cover. While there is still time to resolve the climate crisis, it is time to choose sustainable future, and build a healthy planet for our children and their future generations.
