Govardhan Puja

Govardhan Puja is celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Pratipada of Kartik month. This festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna, an avatar of Lord Vishnu. This is a grand festival celebrated in all Lord Krishna temples. This is a popular festival in Madhura, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and ISKCON temples all over India.

On this puja, various cooked rice items are arranged in the form of a mountain in a presentable way at Lord Krishna Temple. According to scriptures, this festival is celebrated to commemorate incidents in Bhagavata purana where Lord Krishna’s fought a battlefield with Lord Indra for rain in Vrindavan. Angered by Krishna, Lord Indra caused torrential rains. To save the villagers of Vrindavan, Lord Krishna held lifted and held Mount Govardhana as a huge umbrella to save them. This incident represents how the Lord will protect all the devotees who surrender and take refuge in Him.

Other significant reason to celebrate this festival with food: Rice and other harvest are nothing but an outcome of the powerful amalgamation of all the five elements of nature. A seed is rooted on land, nourished by water from the sky, light (as fire) from the Sun and blooms into paddy or harvest with the help of wind (air)for pollination. Celebrating this process and the magnificent cosmic power behind this cycle is Govardhan Puja.


On this day of Govardhan Puja, almost 108 types of food items are prepared and offered to the Lord. This is celebrated in a grand manner all over Madhura, Maharashtra and Gujrat. Devotees wake up early, take a holy bath and assemble at Lord Krishna temple for the event. Some devotees visit popular divyasthalas in the South India for this festival. At the temple, after the special pujas, Various preparations of Prasad -rice items are arranged in a form of a mountain along with sweets and savouries placed in bowls. Special aarti is performed to Lord Krishna and Radhe, Rukmani. Mantra chant and distribution of prasad makes the day special. Devotees observe a fast all day and break their fast with this prasad after the sunset, some devotees consume only the prasad and fast the whole day. The Utsav concludes with a grand procession of the decorated Lord Krishna’s idol in the evening.
