Legend of Kedhara Gowri vrat

This is one of the important Saivite vratas of South India. According to Shiva Purana, Maharishi Brungi, a great Shiva bhaktha visited Kailasha to worship Lord Shiva. While worshipping, he ignores Shakthi/ Parvathi devi and prays only to the Lord. Dismayed with this act, Shakthi asked Lord Shiva why did the maharishi do so, Lord replied that the rishi is focused only on the moksha and not on materialistic life making him worship the Lord. Angered Parvathi Devi removed blood, flesh, and other earthy elements from the rishi’s body. Brungi grew weak and was unable to stand, Shiva gave him a stick to support his bony body. Parvathi devi was infuriated by this act of the Lord and left the Shiva loka.

She reached Sage Gauthama’s ashram on earth plane. Devi told the sage of what happened at Shiva loka; the sage suggested Kedhara vrat to regain her importance and obtain blessings from Lord Shiva. She observed the Kedhara vrata, with great sincerity, pleased by Her austerities Lord Shiva made Devi as His Ida Bagha, the left part of His body. This form is called Ardhanaareeshwara. Since Gowri Devi observed this vrat, the vrata is called Kedhara Gowri vrata.

Rituals
