Paryushan Parv is a holy period of 8-10days observed in the Shukla Paksha period of Bhadrapad month. People in Jain community utilize this period to deepen their spiritual pursuits and intensify five main vows of Jainism.

Five vows of Jainism are,

  • Ahimsa or Ahinsa (Non-Violence)
  • Satya (Truth)
  • Asteya or Achaurya (Not stealing)
  • Brahmacharya (Celibacy)
  • Aparigraha (Non-possessiveness)

Both Digambara and Svetambara sects observe this Paryushan Parv phase.

On this holy day, people read about the 14 dreams that mother Trishala Mata had, in the order- the Elephant, Bullock, Lion, Goddess Lakshmi, Flower garland, Bright full Moon, Sun, Flag, Kalash/Pitcher, Lotus Lake, Milky white sea, Celestial Plane, Pile of gems and Smokeless fire. Each of this symbolized the quality that the holy child Mahavir would possess on birth.

They also read “Kalpa Sutra” that speaks of Lord Mahavir's glorious life. The original text of Kalpa Sutra was written by Sri Bhadrabahu Swami, from the year 357 BCE.
