Mother Teresa arrived in India in 1929 and began teaching in a convent in Darjeeling. During the Bengal famine of 1943, Mother Teresa was increasingly disturbed by the poverty and misery of the people. It is in this time she heard the call of her inner conscience. She decided that she should serve the poor by staying with them. She left the school and began missionary work with the poor in beginning of 1948. She chose to wear a simple, white cotton sari with a blue border replacing her Loreto habit. Mother Teresa adopted Indian citizenship, while she spent a long time in Patna learning basic medical training at Holy Family Hospital and ventured into the slums of Patna. After medical training, she left for Kolkata and founded a school in Motijhil.

On 7 October 1950, Mother Teresa’s request to run a diocesan congregation was approved by Vatican. In Mother Teresa’s words, the congregation would care for "the hungry, the naked, the homeless, the crippled, the blind, the lepers, all those people who feel unwanted, unloved, uncared for throughout society, people that have become a burden to the society and are shunned by everyone". This ‘Missionaries of Charity', was run by 4,500 nuns and was actively involved in various charities in 133 countries. This congregation created homes for people who are in terminal stage of diseases like AIDS, leprosy, and tuberculosis. They also managed many soup kitchens, medical dispensaries, mobile clinics, family, and child counselling programmes, alongside orphanages and schools for underprivileged children. Members of the congregation take vows of chastity, poverty, and obedience, most importantly profess a fourth vow – to render "wholehearted free service to the poorest of the poor”.

Mother Teresa travelled extensively for humanitarian reasons in 1980s and rescued many children & victims from the crisis ground. She and her service belonged to the whole word; Mother Teresa said, "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world. As to my heart, I belong entirely to the Heart of Jesus."

Mother Teresa was conferred with a number of honours, including highest awards like Ramon Magsaysay Peace Prize in 1962 and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She left her mortal body on 5 September 1997 in Kolkata, India. She was canonised (honour of Saint state) on 4 September 2016, and her death anniversary -5 September is a feast day in Roman Catholic community.
