National Sports Day is celebrated in every country to honour the National sports teams, leagues and traditional sports of a country. Dates vary based on their sporting traditions.

In India, National Sports Day is celebrated on 29 August, on the birth anniversary of popular hockey player Major Dhyan Chand, a hockey wizard who won gold medals in Olympics for India. His greatness in the national sport Hockey helped India win Gold in the years 1928, 1932 and 1936. He scored a total of 570 goals in his sporting career, from 1926 to 1949. He is a glorious personality in Indian and world hockey arena. Indian Nation has conferred numerous honours on Major Dhyan Chand. Major Dhyan Chand Award is the highest award presented for lifetime achievement in sports and games.

National sports day was included in the list of celebratory days in the year 2012. On National Sports day, The President honours and confers prestigious sports related awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, Dhyan Chand Award, Arjuna Award and Dronacharya Award at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Eminent sports personalities from various fields of sports are recognised and felicitated on this day.

National Sports day is an opportunity to create awareness on the importance of sports and sportsmanship, also to stress on the need to stay fit and healthy. From 2012, Indian government has announced several sports-related schemes like Khelo India movement on National sports day to highlight the importance of sports in life. People gather to enjoy games of their favourite team. Regardless of the skill level, people get out and play a sport of their choice. Some also begin training for new sporting events like Kabaddi, volleyball, and hockey. Many marathons and sports related activities are held on this day to enhance the spirit of games.
