Parumala Perunnal

Parumala Perunnal is a feast festival in Parumala Church in Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. This is a popular local festival held on November 02 every year. Parumala Perunnal is celebrated to commemorate the death anniversary of Bishop Mar Gregorios Metropolitan, the first ever canonised saint of the famous Malankara Orthodox Church of Kerala. The mortal remains of this Bishop are interred in the Holy church.

Parumala Church and Parumala Thirumeni

St. Peter's & St. Paul's Orthodox Church located at Parumala, Pathanamthitta district is popularly called Parumala Church/Parumala Pally. It is situated at the shores of the river “Pampa” at Parumala, a small town in Pathanamthitta. This church is one of the independent parish of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Churches. This was founded by Saint Thomas, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ during his visit to India in A.D. 52.

The church hosts the tomb of Saint Geevargese Mar Gregorios, also known as Parumala Thirumeni. And the day, Parumala Perunaal celebrated the death anniversary of glorious Saint Geevargese Mar Gregorios who left his mortal body on 2 November 1902 due to chronic abdominal ulcer. In his bishopric period, Gregorios established multiple churches and established schools in different parts of Malankara region. Around the late 1890s, various educational institutions were established successfully by the Malankara Church under the guidance of Parumala Thirumeni and Joseph Mar Dionysius.

Popular schools started by bishop include St. Thomas School at Mulanthuruthy, St. Ignatius School at Kunnamkulam, and the Syrian English School (now known as MGM High School) at Thiruvalla. In the year 1895, Mar Gregorios had already made Parumala Church his main spiritual centre. The church that he established in that year was also consecrated in the names of St. Peter and St. Paul. It is said that he would wake up at 4 am every day to pray the Shehimo prayers and organised prayers on Wednesday and Fridays, special prayers during Lent.

The many testimonies to the glorious intercession of Mar Gregorios have made Parumala Church and His tomb, a holy centre of pilgrimage for most devotees. On the occasion of 45th death anniversary of Mar Gregorios on November 02, 1947, based on the unanimous decision of the episcopal synod held in the same year, Baselios Geevarghese II, Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan canonized Geevarghese Mar Gregorios as a saint for the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church.

Celebrations of Parumala Perunaal is marked by special prayer services and a colourful ceremonial procession where tourists and devotees swarm to participate in the festivities. The festive feast of Parumala perunaal commences from Oct 26th and final feast day falls on November 2nd to commemorate St. Mar Gregorios death anniversary. Devotees from all parts of the state and country swarm the grounds of the church to celebrate this feast day. Special transport routes and accommodation arrangements are made to host this grand local festival.
