United Nations Day


United Nations Day is celebrated on 24 of October every year to mark the anniversary of the UN organization into force. United Nations officially came into existence on 24 October 1945 and United Nations Day has been celebrated since 1948. Around 1971, the United Nations General Assembly recommended that this day to be observed as a public holiday by Member States of the assembly.

The name "United Nations" was coined by American President Franklin D. Roosevelt and the term was first used in the Declaration by United Nations of 1 January 1942, during World War II. This day is celebrated to acknowledge the founding of the organization. This day also represents an opportunity for United Nations Day to reaffirm its ideals including world peace, embrace multiculturalism, and protection of human rights. There is no other global organization like United Nations with legitimacy, convening power and normative impact on the whole world. This important event is a powerful reminder of United Nations values on inclusiveness, peace and harmony to embrace multiculturalism.

Since this day is a symbol of appreciating cultural diversity, culture and the spirit of brotherhood, people celebrate United Nations Day by dressing up in traditional national costumes, flags, and perform dance and music shows. United Nations is well known for their great work in disaster relief, humanitarian aid, peacekeeping, and unity.

We can also participate in voluntary work in organizations working towards humanitarian purposes like Translators Without Borders.

We can “Recycle” electronic gadgets, old appliances, and other materials on this day. The UN is very committed in protecting the environment and this is the best day to contribute to the commitment.

An annual concert is usually held in the General Assembly Hall on the eve of UN Day, due to the pandemic, the concert was prerecorded and screened in the Hall.
