Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on this day on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. His parents were Zaverbhai Patel (father) and Ladbhai (mother). Vallabhbhai Patel was an Indian barrister of Law and a significant leader in the Indian Independence movement. After completing Law in England, he practiced law in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. His meeting with Mahatma Gandhiji in 1917 inspired Patel to join the independence movement. Vallabhbhai Patel committed himself to the great Independence struggle. Plague epidemic in 1917, hit the agricultural community badly in Kheda and Bardoli district. This led to a famine in 1918.

Despite crop failures and epidemic, the British government did not agree to exempt the land revenue and taxes. Vallabhbhai Patel led farmers and Zamindars to revolt against The British to get tax exemption. This agitation went on for about 3-months. During this agitation, he became a close confidante to Gandhi. Patel motivated farmers to revolt against the British government through nonviolence by not paying taxes. His efforts finally paid off after a long struggle and the government was forced to exempt the taxes. It was after this agitation that he was conferred with the title “Sardar“ meaning leader or Chief.

He was well known for his greatest contribution of integrating of 565 princely states during post-independence phase, and creation of “All-India Services”. Popularly known as “The Ironman of India”, he was the first Deputy Prime Minister and the first Home Minister of independent India. Sardar Patel died on December 15th, 1950. In the year 1991, Patel was conferred with India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, posthumously.
