Legend
Savitri Devi was a beautiful daughter of King Ashwapathi of Madura Desa. During her Swayamwar, she chose Sathyavan, a prince who was in exile, living in the forest along with his blind father King Dyumathsen. She moved to the palace along with her price. She remained a devoted wife and a responsible daughter-in-law. Sathyavan fell off a tree in the forest and Lord Yama appeared to take the soul of Sathyavan. Savitri was deeply hurt and pleaded to Lord Yama not to take her husband's soul. She followed Lord Yama everywhere and said she would also die if he took Sathyavan's soul. Moved by her Pathi Devotion (love towards life partner), brought Sathyavan to life and blessed them to regain their lost kingdom. Some fables quote that the prince Sathyavan had a curse that he would die a year after his marriage with Savitri. And Savitri will help him break his curse and regain kingdom.
Rituals
On this day of Jyeshta Purnima tithi we worship Savitri Devi. Wake up early, after physical purification and mental purification. Clean the worship altar, set up a pooja kalash. Women wear fresh or new clothes, dress up in an elegant manner, apply vermilion on the forehead. Offer fruits, grains and neivadhyam to the Goddess and kalas. After pooja, they worship the Vat tree, tie a thread soaked in turmeric paste or vermillion paste around the tree. Offer flowers and pour water to the tree. Perform pradhakshina around the tree. They fast for the whole day. The root of the 'Vat' tree (Banyan tree) is consumed with water. After the Vat tree rituals, women get blessings from their life partner. On this day, people donate food, money, and clothes generously.
