Calculation

D7- Saptamsa chart is an extension of the 5th house of the natal chart. D7 divides each sign into 7 equal parts called Saptamsa. So, there are about 84 Saptamsa for all 12 signs.

Saptamsa = 30°/7 = 4°17’8.5”

Saptamsa     Degrees

First                 0° to 4°17’8.5”

Second           4°17’8.57” to 8°34’17.14”

Third                8°34’17.14” to 12°51’25.71”

Fourth             12°51’25.71” to 17°8’34.28”

Fifth                  17°8’34.28” to 21°25’42.85”

Sixth                 21°25’42.85” to 25°42’51.42”

Seventh          25°42’51.42” to 30°

*Units: degree, minutes, seconds, and microseconds

Planets falling in the first Saptamsa remain in the same sign, and planets in other Saptamsas move based on the Saptamsa number. For instance, the Third Saptamsa of Gemini goes to the third sign from Gemini, Leo.

There are two significant rules set in calculating the D7 chart based on the nature of the sign the planet is posited,

1)If a planet is positioned in an odd sign, then movement/counting commences in the same sign.
2)If a planet is positioned in an Even sign, then movement count commences from the seventh sign from that sign.

Purpose of the Saptamsa Chart

D7 chart spells out Dashas and its effects on all 12 Bhavas in the most straightforward way.

Nature of the Progeny, their wellbeing, behavior, gender, number of children can be interpreted from this D7chart. Example: child prodigies or birth of children with physical or mental disabilities.

The karmic influences from the native’s children on their life- both luck and misfortunes are represented in this chart.

The number of children, grandchildren, abilities, health, inclinations, and achievements can be seen through the D7 chart.

The due date/ week of Childbirth can be predicted during the gestation period based on the Sun’s transit in the D7 chart.

Love affairs, progeny through such relationships can be predicted;

Children from non-procreative ways: Surrogacy, Adoptions, or marrying a widowed person with a child can be analyzed through this chart.

Challenges with progeny, delayed progeny can be foreseen.

Interpretation

Let’s see how to apply the rules to calculate a Saptamsa chart.
For example:
Look at these planetary positions.

Ascendant- Leo at 13 34’, Sun at 6 22 & Jupiter at 27 44 in Virgo sign, Moon at 9 27’ in Gemini, Venus at 19 33’ in Pisces, and Mars at 2 39’ in Taurus signs.

Here’s how the planets will be placed,

Ascendant is in the fourth Saptamsa of Leo, which is an odd sign. In this case, the D7 ascendant moves to the fourth from Leo- Scorpio sign.

Planet Sun is in the second Saptamsa of Virgo- an even sign; so, movement should be calculated from the 7thsign from Virgo, which is Pisces. The Sun will be placed in Aries, which is the second sign Pisces.

Jupiter is in the Seventh Saptamsa of Virgo. Virgo is an even sign. Jupiter moves to the seventh sign from Pisces, which is Virgo.

Moon is in third Saptamsa of Gemini- an odd sign. Therefore, Sun will be placed in the third sign from Gemini, Leo sign.

Venus is in fifth Saptamsa of Pisces- an even sign. So, Venus will occupy the fifth sign from Virgo, which is Capricorn.

Mars is in first Saptamsa of Taurus- an even sign. Mars will be placed in the first sign from the 7thsign of Taurus, Scorpio.

Common Inferences on D7

The pattern varies based on the gender of the native. There are different formulas to calculate the chart.

Ascendant shows the promise of progeny. The Dasha or Antar Dasha of the ascendant lord of the planets in ascendant can highly influence progeny. The offspring's physical stature, complexion, and mental health can be indicated. Beneficial planets in Lagna will result in lucky, successful children.

If the ascendant is aspected by benefic planets in odd sign, the native enjoys comfort from male children, and if its an even sign, the female child remains a source of happiness to the native.

If the lords of 5th or 11th houses occupy barren signs (Aries, Gemini, Leo, and Virgo) and if the ascendant falls in any of these barren sign's houses, then the native will not have progeny.

Venus denotes the essence of life and genetic composition that a child inherits. It plays a significant role in deciding the health and nature of the child. Strong Venus shows healthy, talented, and intelligent children. Weak or poor Venus indicates genetic defects in children.

Childbirth may be delayed if the Lagna lord receives malefic aspects from any malefic planets.

If the Ascendant Lord, 5th, and 7th Lords are powerful, Jupiter, Moon, or lord of the Moon's sign are beneficial. The native will be blessed with genius kids.

If beneficial planets like Jupiter, Venus occupy 5th or 11th houses, Moon indicates promising results.

If Rahu and Mars's aspect occupies the 5th or 11th houses, it indicates no children or deaths through serpent attack or poison.

Jupiter is the Primary Karka of children. He is a favorable planet for children and their legacy.

Saturn in the 5th house with Rahu in 4th or 12th conjunct with malefic (Mars and Ketu) brings inauspicious results.

Saturn is the weakest planet in this chart. If Saturn in the 5th house is associated with a weak Jupiter, Mercury's aspect indicates the loss of children.
