When auspicious choghadiyas coincide with Rahu Kaal

Shadow planet Rahu is considered one of the most powerful and malefic celestial influences. Rahu Kaal is often referred to as a poisonous or dangerous time during both day and night. When Rahu Kaal overlaps with a good Choghadiya, it must be strictly avoided for any auspicious activities. Even if the Choghadiya is deemed favorable, planet Rahu’s influence overpowers it, making the time highly inauspicious for important tasks. Always check the Rahu Kaal before proceeding with any plan to ensure it doesn't interfere with the auspicious time today. Find Aaj Ka Rahu Kaal.

When auspicious choghadiyas coincide with inauspicious ones (Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, or Kaal Ratri)

Suppose a good Choghadiya overlaps with an inauspicious period such as Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, or Kaal Ratri. In such cases, the time should be avoided despite its label as Shubh, Labh, or Amrit. The presence of these inauspicious periods, influenced by malefic planetary forces, can negate the benefits of an otherwise good Choghadiya. Therefore, even if it appears to be an auspicious time today, overlapping with Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, or Kaal Ratri makes it unsuitable for important activities.

What is Choghadiya?

Choghadiya is an Indian astrology-based Muhurat system that serves as a guide to identifying auspicious time periods throughout the day. In Vedic astrology, both time and spatial energy are considered fundamental forces that influence every aspect of life in the microcosm. The timing of actions plays a crucial role in determining outcomes—some periods bring success and positivity, while others are governed by malefic influences. Choghadiya classifies these time intervals based on their planetary associations and qualities. Unlike the detailed astronomical focus of a Panchang, Choghadiya offers a simplified view of favorable and unfavorable timings for daily activities. These are divided into two types: Day Choghadiya (Din Ka Choghadiya), which spans from sunrise to sunset, and Night Choghadiya (Raat Ka Choghadiya), which covers the time from sunset to the next sunrise. The timings below are based on a standard sunrise at 6:00 AM.

Choghadiya Meaning

The meaning of Choghadiya is four ghadi sums to 96 minutes. (Choghadiya translates to Chau - four and Ghadiya/Ghadi - time. One unit of Ghadi is time period of 24 minutes. One Choghadiya means four units of Ghadi, i.e., 96 minutes.) It is also known as “Chaturshtika Muhurat.” There are seven good and bad Choghadiyas, Udveg, Labh, Char, Rog, Shubh, Kaal, and Amrit.

Inauspicious Choghadiyas - Udveg, Rog, and Kaal.

  • Udveg Choghadiya - This is an inauspicious Choghadiya. It is ruled by planet Sun. However, its an ideal time to perform administration related activities.
  • Labh Choghadiya - This word means profitable; this period is ruled by planet Mercury. Anything that’s initiated in this time period will ensure great profit and return of investment.
  • Char Choghadiya - This is a neutral period. It’s ruled by the planet Venus. Travel, dance, cultural and religious activities can be performed in this period.
  • Rog Choghadiya - Planet Mars rules this Choghadiya. It is also an inauspicious period. Since planet Mars rules this time period, it is excellent for conflict management and strategises and destroys enemies.
  • Shubh Choghadiya -  Shubh means Beneficial; planet Jupiter rules this period. This Choghadiya is ideal for married activities and all Manglik formalities.
  • Kaal Choghadiya - Saturn rules this Choghadiya. Kaal means destructive. This period is marked as Kala due to its ruling planet and might fetch adverse outcomes. The only exceptions are Construction and Agricultural activities
  • Amrit Choghadiya - Amrit means nectar or food of the Gods. It is an advantageous period for all endeavours. Planet Moon rules this Choghadiya.

The Vaar Lord rules the first Choghadiya of each weekday-vara. For example, on a Sunday, the first Choghadiya is ruled by Sun-Udveg and followed in the order Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. The last Choghadiya of the day(Sunset) is also ruled by the lord of the day- Udveg in this example.

The occurrence of Choghadiyas varies for each weekday. i.e., the sequence of Monday is different from Tuesday. However, the order of the Choghadiyas remains the same. But the sequence for every Monday is the same, as it is for each weekday.

Ruling planet of the day:

  • Sunday - Sun
  • Monday - Moon
  • Tuesday - Mars
  • Wednesday - Mercury
  • Thursday - Jupiter
  • Friday - Venus
  • Saturday - Saturn

Based on the sunrise and sunset, Choghadiyas are classified into day and night Choghadiyas.

How Today Shubh Muhurat or Aaj ka Choghadiya is Calculated?

1 Ghadi is equal to a period of 24 minutes. For instance, the sunrise on day 1 is at 6.00 AM and Sunset is at 6.00 PM, followed by sunrise on the next day at 6.30 AM.
Vedic daytime is of approximately 710-740 minutes, and night is of 720-740 minutes,
Each day Choghadiya lasts about 90 minutes, 710/8 = 88.75 minutes = 1 hour 28 minutes 45 seconds.
each night Choghadia's last 740/8 = 92.5 minutes = 1 hour 32 minutes and 30 seconds.
All of these parts are mostly equal in duration. At the same time, it is significantly dependant on the location. In certain places, days are longer, and nights are shorter or vice versa.

What is Vaar Vela, Kaal Vela, and Kaal Ratri

Vaar Vela and Kaal Vela time periods of the day and Kaal Ratri of the night are considered highly inauspicious.
Vaar Vela occurs in all Choghadiyas, and Kaal vela is the Kaal time period ruled by Saturn.
Kaal Ratri is the Laabh Choghadiya ruled by mercury, and this nighttime period is considered inauspicious.
