What is Rahu Kaal?

In Vedic astrology, Rahu Kaal is also spelled as Rahu Kalam. It is about 1 hour and 30 minutes approximately that fall every day. But the time duration varies according to the length of the time between sunrise to sunset. The planet rahu rules this 90 minutes of every day, and this time period is called rahu kaal. He is considered the most malefic planet in astrology among the nine planets. Tuesday, Friday, and Sunday have more malefic effects than other weekdays.

So Rahu kaal is considered inauspicious before starting any new work and daily activities. Many have believed that auspicious works during this rahu kaal time will never give good results. People do not begin new ventures, marriage proposals, journeys, trades, interviews, trades, business deals, sale or purchase of assets, and any other necessary activities during this time period.

How to Calculate Rahu Kaal?

Rahu Kaal is one of the eight equal time-segments of the day and is considered an inauspicious time period in vedic astrology. These segments are calculated by taking the total time between sunrise and sunset at a given place and then dividing this time duration by 8. 

For each weekday, assuming the sun rises at 6:00 am, Rahu kaal falls as under:

Rahu kaal timings and duration are not the same for any two locations. Because sunrise and sunset timings keep changing throughout the year, in other words, rahu kaal varies from place to place, as it depends on the location of sunrise and sunset time. So it is advised to follow as per the city.

Understanding Planet Rahu

Shadow planet rahu is considered a malefic planet in vedic astrology. He is depicted as a human head with a serpent body. Rahu signifies trouble, damage, anxiety, obsession, disorder, and confusion. Also, this is not ideal for smooth, successful transactions and endeavours. Since the time period, He rules might reflect all these attributes, vedic scholars advise avoiding performing any productive tasks during rahu kaal.

• Avoid financial transactions or investments 
• Do not begin anything new- learning a skill, commencing school, new medicine routine, new adventure sport, moving into a new house. 
• Avoid legal discussions or activities- signing agreements, filing documents. 
• Do not commence any travel, journey 

 Things to do 

• Perform Rahu Pooja and Homa  
• Worship Goddess Durga and Naga Devatas  
• Perform remedial rituals for Doshas due to Planet Rahu. 

Easy Way to Remember Rahu Kalam

The mnemotechnic to remember the chart is "7:30 Mother Saw Father Wearing The Turban Suddenly.'' 

7.30 because Rahu Kaal always start from the second segment of the day and the first letter of each word represent the weekday based on the sequence of time periods.  

Mother = Monday (7.30-9.00) 

Saw = Saturday (9.00-10.30) 

Father = Friday (10.30-12.00) 

Wearing = Wednesday (12.00-1.30) 

The = Thursday (1.30-3.00) 

Turban = Tuesday (3.00-4.30) 

Suddenly = Sunday (4.30-6.00) 

Rahu Kaal Pooja and Remedies

Though rahu kaal is inauspicious for most of the activities, there is an opportunity in every crisis.
We can utilise this time period to nullify and mitigate the malefic effects of Rahu in the natal chart. It is a robust and straightforward procedure to appease the planet and Goddess Durga who rules the planet.

1. Worshipping Goddess Durga and listening to Durga chants to remove negative effect of Rahu Kaal.
2. During Rahu Kaal time period Light a lemon lamp to Goddess Durga on Tuesdays or Fridays. It believed to reduce the malefic effect. 
3. Offer fruits or lemon garland into goddess Durga.
4. Chant goddess Durga mantra for 108 times or 1008 times.

Typical vedic daytime is between Sunrise and Sunset. It is divided into eight equal parts of 90 minutes. Rahu Kaal occurs in any of these parts of both day and night except first part during sunrise. It never occurs in the first part of the day because usually the first part is ruled by the lord of that particular weekday. Rahu Kaal in the nighttime are not given importance due to the biological cycle of sleep.
